If only I had started freelancing sooner…

Can you remember the first time you "decided" you wanted to freelance?  Or, the first time you felt that urge to write beyond that required of school or work?

I knew I wanted to write long before I ever set foot in a law school classroom or courtroom.  But what I didn't know was how to go about getting started as a freelance writer or how freelancing could mesh with my other interests.  Well, go figure, time slipped away.   Too much time actually.  Rather than sitting down to write, I spent time "thinking" about writing and how to start freelancing.  Before I knew it, other interests seemed to preempt my writing interests, leading me to put off jumping into the freelance world.  I dabbled, but I didn't jump.

Whether you want to freelance "on the side" while practicing or studying law, or leave the profession entirely in order to immerse yourself in a full-time writing career, don't shy away from your dream.  If you're thinking about ditching a full-time job to freelance, you'll certainly want to come up with a good plan that considers the financial implications of switching careers, among other considerations (e.g., you might want to set aside enough savings to carry you until you start getting paid for your writing).  If you foresee part-time freelancing as your cup of tea, go on and dive right in.

Today is a great day to start pitching your ideas.  So, go ahead...sit down and pound out a query letter.
