Can Mommy Cards Help with Networking?
Move over business cards, it's time to make room for Mommy Cards. If handing another mom your professional law firm business card seems uncomfortable, especially when you're simply trying to set up a playdate with a new mom you've met at the playground, think about stuffing a stack of Mommy Cards in your purse.
Mommy Cards are business cards for moms. Hmmm...guess in fairness, that makes them Daddy Cards for dads. I'm a huge fan of pre-printed Mom business cards and think lawyers thinking about flexible work options should think about having a few made up. Why? First, a pre-printed card with your name, email address, and phone number means you can forget about having to rifle through your bag for a pen and paper when you want to exchange contact info, especially when your little one is about to have a meltdown. Second, they're affordable. Vista Print offers free cards. The Mommy Card offers beautiful cards that will make your friends and colleagues jealous. Most importantly, however, they are a networking essential.
When it comes to finding jobs or learning about new opportunities, within the legal profession or elsewhere, it's surprising where and when a lead may pop up, like at a preschool event. Professional mommy cards say a lot about you--that you're committed to your responsibilities (e.g., family) and also committed to investing in yourself and career. Mommy Cards may open networking opportunities that professional cards might not otherwise--for example, invitations to mom focused groups and clubs (which may in turn lead to further networking opportunities and an expansion of your existing network). Go on now, get your Mom cards and don't hesitate to hand them out.
