Have a dream, like belly dancing? Pursue it alongside the law.
You may feel chained to your desk right now, or just incredibly thankful to have a desk given the economy. But, do you have to wait until... the economy improves, you have enough money saved, the children are in kindergarten or headed to college, you or your spouse gets that promotion, you find an affordable living community for your parents, you drop five pounds...(get the idea?)...before you can begin launching yourself toward your dream?
Absolutely not. Following that nagging dream begins today. Right now. Step one is resolving to follow that dream, even if you've long tucked it away beneath work or personal commitments. Can't remember what dreams you had before the law swallowed you--or feel like you simply don't have any dreams or forgot how to dream? Challenge yourself now. Pick up the newspaper, surf your way to a local events listing, head somewhere (even if it's just to the coffee shop next door), or grab a piece of paper and a pen and start writing (not sure what to write? why not start with scribbling down a few things that stress you out). Do something you never do, for yourself, even if it's small.
Here's the great part. You don't have to quit your day job to start following your dream, as this Washington Post story about the lawyer-turned belly dancer proves (she taught belly dancing on the "side" for years). Even if your dream is to take a career time out to sail around the world, you can start creating an action plan today for achieving that dream, even if that start involves researching the best ways to approach your firm for a sabbatical (or an extra week off), or opening a "sailing" savings account and collecting your spare coins for deposit into that account.
Why wait to act on your dream or discover something new about yourself that ultimately leads you to be happier in life and in the law?
The Darling Hill lawyer challenge is on...what's your dream and what are you doing about it?
