Are You a Pregnant Lawyer with a Pink Slip?
Imagine getting a pink slip while pregnant. Talk about STRESS, especially if you're the primary breadwinner, right? Discussion of Pink slips and pregnancy is buzzing over at ABCNews.
Whether you're expecting a child, hoping to become pregnant during this down economy and worried about your job, or have been recently laid-off, what would you do if your legal employer gave you a pink slip?
After the shock settles, one thing you must do is pull yourself up and start thinking about the things you can do to stay marketable while between jobs. My book Staying at Home, Staying in the Law is packed with ideas for staying, or getting, marketable while you're off the legal track.
Need something to do right now, at least so you can remind yourself you have purpose? Start researching volunteer organizations in your neighborhood. While pro bono work probably won't pay the electric bill, it will help to enhance your professional resume, expand your legal experience and knowledge, and expose you to, what could turn out to be, very important contacts which help you land a paying gig.

This actually happened to me back in 2005. I was six months pregnant. You know what I did? I opened my own firm and have been doing well ever since. I literally never missed a paycheck. The key is to learn how to network and get clients as soon as you start practicing.
was told if i took longer than 6 weeks after birth, boss would give job to someone else.
How does one pay for childcare while doing pro bono to stay marketable? It seems like a catch-22 and I haven't figured it out yet.
