Virtual Law Practice, Briefcase Lawyers: It’s a New ‘Flexible’ World for Lawyers

Not long ago I bumped into a lawyer who challenged the possibility of practicing law from anywhere. Unauthorized practice (licensing/ethics), office space, working 'without' support and 'image' where the big hangups. Though I argued that flexibility and portability are 'IN,' pointing to technology and even referencing the ABA Journal Magazine that had featured a spread on virtual practice, there was no sale.

For lawyers contemplating ways to stay connected to the law while on a detour or timeout, looking for work or thinking about starting their own practice, or who can't quite yet understand how flexible practicing is possible, check out How to Practice Law Out of a Backpack (thanks to Susan of Solo Practice University for forwarding the link). Maybe you'll be sold on the idea.

  1. I don't hear near enough discussion of the convenience factor with the "virtual office" option. In Chicago we use a virtual office provider and have access to some 20 offices around the area, nearly always convenient to our clientele. You can't tell me people would rather come downtown to a "normal" office versus being able to get together within 15 minutes of where they live.
